The Sheffield IWW ‘What we do and why we do it!’ A workshop at the Sheffield Anarchist Book Fair May 11th

As part of the 4th Sheffield Anarchist Book fair, the Sheffield IWW branch will be hosting a workshop aiming to introduce our history, principles, and most importantly what we’re doing in workplaces in Sheffield and beyond.

Revolution isn’t only for guerrillas and old white men with beards, it doesn’t reside in dusty books, it’s not some tumultuous upheaval in the distant future.

Revolution can happen here and now, bit by bit, building the new in the shell of the old through action. We’re fighting for a more liberating way of being wherever we can, at work, at home, in relationships, in neighborhoods.

If you’ve got any questions about how we do things,

If you’re frustrated with the way your workplace is run. If your disillusioned with ‘politics’ or sick of being told leave it to the experts.

Come on down.

Hello all.

The MAY GMB will take place on the revised date of….

Monday the 13th at 5.30pm.

There’s loads happening this month so please get down and join the discussions, this is the last meeting before the Annual conference in Birmingham.

Lot’s of big changes and developments for the Union at a national level, so if you’ve got an opinion about any of the below you may want to come on down…

New Officer elections
Union safer spaces policy
The new Training department
The union employing paid staff for the first time
much more….

Also theres the epicness of a motion to fund the NORTHERN IWW OFFICE based in SHEFFIELD!

The venue is Sheffield Hallam Uni library so it’s nice and central. Its room 3.02 which is on the 3rd floor of the main library. Its a bit of a weird building if your not familiar with it so for directions please meet SF (will be wearing a wobblie t shirt) at the main entrance (will be there from 5.15)

So the main street street level entrance is here.. by Odeon cinema.

Then you have to walk down the maze like stairs to get to the actual library entrance

Solidarity with IWW member’s out on strike at Sister Camelot, MINNEAPOLIS, MN.

Canvass workers at Sisters Camelot, a non-profit mobile food shelf and soup kitchen, have gone on strike today after the organization’s managing collective refused to negotiate with the canvass union. The workers went public as members of the Industrial Workers of the World on Monday, and met to negotiate with the collective this morning. This unionization comes after months of organizing among the workers in response to changes in the workplace, resulting in a decline in conditions and mismanagement of the worker’s time and the organization’s resources.

The strike began this afternoon at 12:30PM when the managing collective announced that they were unwilling to negotiate on any demands. The workers are now prepared to continue the strike by refusing to canvass door-to-door or conduct fundraising efforts until the collective comes back to the table ready to meet the workers’ demands.

Firstly let us welcome all of you to the One Big Union! We send you this message in solidarity and in support of your fight. We are all inspired by what you are doing and stand right beside you all as you struggle to win.

The path, we have no doubt, is not easy, and you will all be struggling in different ways, but you are not the first and will not be the last. All workers, must fight, and continue to fight if we are ever to improve our own lives. We are stronger together and you have all shown this by standing together as a union, as Fellow Workers.

What you fight for now may be working conditions, but what it represents is an inspiration to other people in your town, in your industry, to people around the world who see you standing proudly holding your red cards.

The union makes us strong and each one of you has made the union stronger through your actions.

Thank you for what you are doing, and we hope you see a quick victory!

John Lewis IWW members to take part in BBC Radio 4 discussion.

This is to inform you that BBC Radio 4 will be airing a programme about outsourcing which will feature members of the IWW who work as cleaning staff at John Lewis (we were contacted by the BBC a few weeks ago and got them in contact with these Fellow Workers).

The programme will be broadcast this evening, 14 January 2013, on Radio 4 at 8:00 PM. After transmission it will be available to listen to for a week on the Radio 4 website at www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/

Hi All,

Just a reminder that we will be having a *film showing of ’9 to 5′ at the
Red Deer *on* Wednesday 16th January from 7.30pm*. the Red Deer is near to
the St. Georges Library at the University of Sheffield, it is at 18 Pitt
Street, S1 4DD. We will be upstairs in the function room, please just ask
at the bar and they will direct you to the stairs if you are unsure.

For those of you who have not experienced the brilliance of this film
before it stars Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Thomlin as workers at a
large corporation. When their boss pushes them to the limit they get
together to sort him out, and rid the corporation of some other problems it
has made for its workers. Plus, Dolly Parton wrote that theme tune for it!
(sing-a-long optional).

New cafe venue is opening especially for us, so you can allways sup a tea if your early.

Nearest tram stop is Langestt/Primrose View, you can get a 57/11/12/13
from Snig Hill (city centre) or a 52 to Hillsborough Interchange where
it’s a 15 minute walk.

What is a branch?

A Branch is the basic unit of the IWW. It consists of 10 or more dues
paying members who live within an hour’s travel of each other. The
essential difference between a branch and an IWW group is that a branch
is an official /Chartered/ unit of the IWW and is entitled to certain
rights and responsibilities as defined in the IWW Constitution. Perhaps
the most important benefit is a Branch is entitled to retain half of the
dues it collects. Branches are required to make monthly reports and
accountings of dues monies collected.
